About OMDs

Understanding Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders

Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs) involve abnormal movement patterns of the face and mouth. These can interfere with normal growth and development, negatively impacting breathing, swallowing, speech, and even sleep quality.

Therapy focuses on re-educating the muscles to achieve proper resting posture—lips closed, breathing through the nose, and the tongue resting on the roof of the mouth. By addressing the root cause of these muscular imbalances, we can create lifelong improvements in overall health and well-being.

Proper Resting Posture

Lips closed, nasal breathing, tongue resting on the roof of the mouth.

Root-Cause Approach

We retrain the muscles driving function, not just the symptoms.

Lifelong Benefits

Improvements in breathing, sleep, speech, and overall well-being.

Therapy Programs

What to expect from therapy

Our process is structured, supportive, and designed to create lasting neurological and muscular changes.

Step 01

Initial Assessment

A comprehensive evaluation of oral/facial muscles and health history, often involving a “Discovery Call” to determine the best treatment plan.

Step 02

Customized Program

Programs are personalized and involve daily, consistent exercises of approximately 5 minutes, done twice daily designed to strengthen the tongue, lips, and facial muscles.

Step 03

Duration

Therapy usually spans 5–10 months, with appointments scheduled every 2 weeks to progress and update exercises.

Step 04

Virtual or In-Person

1-on-1 sessions are offered online via Zoom, allowing clients to complete therapy from the comfort of home.

Step 05

Habituation Stage

The final phase focuses on making the new, proper muscle patterns subconscious so they happen automatically.

Step 06

Re-check Visits

Once the program is finished, follow-up visits occur over 3–12 months to ensure the changes are permanent and stable.

Symptoms

Is This You?

Dysfunction in the oral and facial muscles presents differently across lifespans. Recognizing the signs is the first step toward restoring natural function.

The Root Cause

Many common issues like snoring, jaw tension, and orthodontic relapse are not isolated problems. They are symptoms of improper neuromuscular habits involving the tongue, lips, and jaw.

Adult Symptoms

  • Chronic snoring and sleep apnea indicators
  • Waking up with a persistently dry mouth
  • TMJ dysfunction, jaw clicking, or pain
  • Frequent tension headaches and neck stiffness
  • Teeth shifting post-orthodontic treatment

Pediatric Symptoms

  • Habitual open-mouth resting posture
  • “Messy” eating habits or difficulty swallowing
  • Restless, fragmented, or noisy sleep
  • Speech articulation delays, particularly lisps
  • Dark circles under the eyes (allergic shiners)
Methodology

Repatterning the Hardware

Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is essentially physical therapy for the mouth. We focus on retraining the neuromuscular patterns of the tongue and facial muscles.

When these muscles are weak or ‘mis-programmed,’ it leads to cascading issues with breathing, swallowing, and sleep. We don’t just treat the temporary symptoms; we actively re-pattern the underlying muscular hardware for long-term health.

The Four Pillars of Health

Pillar The Goal The Clinical Impact
Nasal Breathing 24/7 inhalation through the nose. Improves oxygen filtration and vital nitric oxide production.
Lip Seal Lips closed and relaxed at rest. Prevents dry mouth and protects the structural dental arch.
Palatal Tongue Rest Tongue fully suctioned to the roof. Acts as a natural retainer and maintains an open airway.
Correct Swallow Swallowing without tongue-thrusting. Prevents teeth from shifting and aids in proper digestion.
Quick Self-Assessment

Myofunctional Therapy Self-Assessment

If you check off more than a few of these, you or your child may benefit from a professional assessment.

1 Resting Posture & Breathing

2 Swallowing & Eating Habits

3 Oral Habits & Physical Structure

4 Symptoms & Pain

If you answered YES to 3 or more, a consultation with a certified myofunctional therapist can help determine the best next step.
